Report summary

On the fourth anniversary of the beginning of global lockdowns, with an economy that has right-sided a bit, the general work environment feels more stable. While work location preferences have slightly shifted, most worker attitudes and priorities remain consistent. Our latest report looks at where people are working, how engaged and satisfied they feel about their jobs, and what they think about generative AI's impact on the workforce.

  • Workers now have a greater preference for hybrid work than for remote work: Employees are less likely to prefer remote work (23%), and more likely to want to work in a hybridly (29%) than they did a year ago.
  • Workers are generally satisfied and engaged, but Gen Z remains an outlier: The young cohort of workers report being less engaged with their jobs than all workers (81% vs. 88%) and continue to drive the quiet quitting trend.

Methodology

This report features data from a new Morning Consult survey fielded Jan. 17- 20, 2024, among 6,625 U.S. adults, including 3,389 employed adults; with an unweighted margins of error of +/-1 and +/-2 percentage points, respectively.

Throughout the report, we compared our 2024 figures to surveys fielded in Jan. 2022 and Jan. 2023. You can see those surveys’ full methodologies here and here, respectively.

All survey interviews were conducted online, and the data was weighted based on age, gender, race, educational attainment, region, gender by age and race by educational attainment.
