Webinar On-Demand: State of U.S. Elections in August 2024
Key Takeaways
Vice President Kamala Harris' nascent presidential campaign has given the Democratic Party a fresher and more popular image for key swing voter groups. Her arrival at the top of the ticket has also energized the Democratic base, which increasingly looks to her as its standard-bearer since President Joe Biden dropped his re-election bid in July.
But by public opinion standards, the Democratic Party remains in a worse place compared to four years ago, before voters' confidence eroded during Biden's presidency, leaving views of the Democratic and Republican parties' competence, empathy and fitness as close as they've been in a decade.
Meanwhile Tim Walz's favorability rating spiked from 18% to 38% as his unfavorables rose from 11% to 33% after Harris selected him to be her running mate, leaving his net favorability rating 5 percentage points above water, slightly superior to Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance’s net rating of -1 at the same point of his own rollout.
In this webinar, recorded on Aug. 15, 2024 at 12 p.m. ET, Morning Consult analysts Jason McMann, Cameron Easley and Eli Yokley discussed the state of the Democratic Party ahead of the DNC and how Tim Walz's standing has changed since entering the race as the vice presidential candidate.
