U.S. Consumer Confidence Tracker
Each day, Morning Consult surveys thousands of U.S. consumers on their views regarding personal finances and business conditions, providing an unparalleled gauge of consumer sentiment in real-time.
During this period of heightened economic uncertainty, Morning Consult will be updating this page weekly (in addition to our normal monthly updates available in the Global Consumer Confidence Dashboard).
Key Takeaways
Morning Consult's Index of Consumer Sentiment (ICS) had a slightly more volatile start to September than had been the case in recent weeks, though on net the index changed little week over week.
The five underlying components of the ICS, encompassing views on both current and future conditions, for both personal financial situations and the economy overall, have largely moved in similar patterns over the past week, suggesting no one factor is dominating the overall sentiment picture.
Adults earning $100,000 or more had a relatively large drop in sentiment last week, though this cohort's perceptions of the economy and their personal financial situations has since bounced most of the way back. A decline in sentiment among this group is notable as they have been disproportionately responsible for driving topline spending gains; pullbacks in sentiment could have negative implications for discretionary purchases.

Reading this data
Higher numbers indicate greater consumer confidence. In order to gauge consumer sentiment, Morning Consult asks five questions relating to personal finances and business conditions in the country as a whole. The results from those five questions are then inputted into Index of Consumer Sentiment (ICS).
